Surprising Activities that Can Harm Your Hearing

Your hearing is important. You rely on your hearing to communicate with loved ones, collaborate with coworkers, and to hear all of your favorite sounds. In order to keep hearing your best, it’s important to be proactive of your hearing health now and for the future.

Some of our favorite activities and pastimes can actually be dangerous for our hearing due to loud noise exposure. Find out if any of your favorite activities can lead to noise-induced hearing loss!

Activities that Can Affect Your Hearing

Sound is measured in decibels (dB). The higher the decibel level, the louder the noise. On the decibel scale, the level increase of 10 means that a sound is actually 10 times more intense or powerful. Any sound over 85 decibels can be dangerous to your hearing when exposed on a regular basis. Impulse sounds that reach over 100 decibels can damage your hearing just one time during exposure.

Below are a list of activities/sports and their decibel level:

  • Hunting or target shooting (140-175 dB)
  • Live music events (110-130 dB)
  • Sports stadiums (105-130 dB)
  • Power tools or lawn mowers (90-112 dB)
  • Motorcycling or boating (80-100 dB)

What You Can Do

To help prevent hearing loss, it’s important to wear proper hearing protection if you plan on partaking in any of the above activities. If you enjoy hunting or going to the shooting range it is incredibly important to wear hearing protection for shooting. Loud impulse sounds such as a shotgun firing can be detrimental to your hearing after just one time.

If you enjoy listening to live music, attending sports games, riding motorcycles, or you use power tools on a regular basis, it is also important to wear hearing protection, such as earplugs. Custom earplugs will fit the exact shape of your ears and will provide you with optimal protection against loud sounds.

Schedule an Appointment

If you plan on being exposed to sounds over 85 decibels, it is important to plan ahead and wear hearing protection. We can take a mold of your ears and help you find a pair of earplugs that will help you. If you have been exposed to loud sounds and are experiencing a ringing in your ears or sounds seem muffled, then you should come in for a test to determine if you could be helped by a hearing aid.
