The Ultimate Guide for Hearing Health Check-Ups

The Ultimate Guide for Hearing Health Check-Ups

Taking care of your hearing health is just as important as maintaining your overall physical well-being. Regular check-ups of your hearing can help you catch potential issues early, ensuring you continue to enjoy the sounds you love.

Our goal at Gold Country Hearing & Balance is to walk you through everything you need to know about maintaining your hearing health, from recognizing the signs of hearing loss to understanding what your management options are.

Recognizing the Signs of Hearing Loss

It’s important to be aware of the early signs that might indicate hearing loss. Here are some key indicators that suggest it might be time for a test to determine if you could be helped by a hearing aid:

  • Difficulty Understanding Speech: If you find it challenging to follow conversations, especially in noisy environments, this might be an early sign of hearing loss.
  • Increasing Volume Levels: Frequently turning up the volume on your television, radio, or phone can indicate that you might not be hearing as well as you used to.
  • Muffled Sounds: Sounds may start to seem muffled or less clear, making it hard to distinguish words and sentences.
  • Ringing in the Ears: Persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears, known as tinnitus, can be a sign of hearing problems.
  • Listening Fatigue: If listening and understanding conversations leave you feeling tired, this might be due to your brain working harder to process sounds.

Understanding Your Hearing Loss

A test to determine if you could be helped by a hearing aid will show where your hearing is at – the results will be recorded on an audiogram.

  • Normal Hearing: Hearing thresholds between 0-25 dB across all frequencies.
  • Mild Hearing Loss: Hearing thresholds between 26-40 dB.
  • Moderate Hearing Loss: Hearing thresholds between 41-55 dB.
  • Severe Hearing Loss: Hearing thresholds between 71-90 dB.
  • Profound Hearing Loss: Hearing thresholds above 90 dB.

Our team will thoroughly explain the results of your audiogram and help you understand what degree of hearing loss you have as well as what the best management option will be.
